Undercover Brits' secret tests on car

The News of the World

A CRACK team of forensic scientists have secretly flown to Portugal and carried out INDEPENDENT tests on the hire car used by Kate and Gerry McCann in a bold bid to prove their innocence.

The Renault Scenic is at the centre of the Portuguese police investigation. But it is understood they were not aware that the freelance crew of experts had swooped on the vehicle just a few miles from Praia da Luz and carried out a painstaking examination.

They spent more than nine hours working on the car overnight.

The scientists, wearing protective white suits and using the latest techniques and equipment, dismantled the car in the double garage of a Pounds 1 million villa owned by a friend of the McCanns-wealthy British tycoon John Geraghty, 68.

A source said: "Nobody in the area had a clue what was going on.

"The experts basically stripped the vehicle and took it apart so they could take as many samples as possible.

"It was an extremely thorough job. If there was any evidence to be found, those guys will have got it.

"Once all the samples had been taken, recorded and sealed for analysis, the car was put back together. It was a long, slow process but one which had to be done properly.

"Anyone seeing the car afterwards would never have guessed it had been subjected to such an examination."

The aim was to complete the probe before the car was hired and contaminated by other Algarve holidaymakers.

The vehicle was later returned to the Budget rental depot at Faro Airport.

It is understood Portuguese cops then seized the car to remove a tracker device, the size of a credit card, attached to the carburettor. But it is believed the detectives are still NOT yet aware that the independent tests have been carried out.

Local police have claimed Kate accidentally killed Madeleine and, with the help of Gerry, hid the body.

Sources on the force say DNA evidence from the Renault showed the presence of Madeleine's blood, bodily fluids and hair in the car, including the boot.

They say this supports their theory Madeleine's body was moved in the car but the McCanns have dismissed this as "pathetic".

When the family moved from the Mark Warner apartment to a villa, Madeleine's sandals-still holding her sweat-clothes and soiled nappies from the twins were in the car which could all offer innocent explanations.

But experts are convinced the results of the latest trawl through the vehicle could be pivotal.

A source said last night: "Carrying out independent forensics is highly significant. The witness statements and innocent explanations of circumstantial evidence are important.

"But the DNA results are absolutely crucial."

Last week British scientists who carried out official tests on the car for the Portuguese police accused the detectives of twisting evidence.

The Forensic Science Service in Birmingham is said to have sent an email to the Portuguese force complaining they had "wildly misused" laboratory findings.

Cops were accused of overplaying the findings by suggesting they showed Madeleine's body could have been carried in the boot.

The state prosecutor has warned detectives that without finding a corpse they have little chance of charging the McCanns.
