McCann couple loses Supreme court appeal against Gonçalo Amaral

The case appeared after the publication of the book "Maddie: A Verdade da Mentira", in which the former PJ inspector raises suspicions about Maddie McCann's parents being involved in the child's abduction.

The Supreme Court of Justice confirmed this Tuesday the decision from the Appellate Court to revoke the payment of compensation amounting to 500 thousand euro by former PJ inspector Gonçalo Amaral to the parents of Madeleine McCann, who went missing in the Algarve in 2007.

The Lisbon Appellate Court had revoked, on the 19th of April of 2016, the decision that forced Gonçalo Amaral to pay 500 thousand euro to the McCann couple, the parents of the child that went missing in the Algarve, over damages that had been caused by the publication of the book "Maddie: A Verdade da Mentira" (edited in 2008).

In the book, the former PJ inspector raises suspicions about the child's parents being involved in the abduction.

According to Supreme court sources that were heard by Lusa, the Supreme's decision confirms the fundaments that were the base of the Appellate Court's decision to revoke the compensation payment that had been decided by the first civil instance.[/quote]
