Pages 2054-2055

These two pages are an official document for the case file regarding the search dog examination of apartments in the Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, Lagos on 31 July 2007.

The seven participants are indicated as being two members of the Policia Judiciaria (PJ); UK NPIA specialist, Mark Harrison, and the UK dog handler, Martin Grime; the two English Springer spaniels - Eddie and Keela; and Mrs Sylvia Batista, a manager of the Ocean club who is noted as the holder of the keys to the apartment and who was present solely to open doors.

All the work performed was recorded on video in image and sound.

The apartments searched were those previously occupied by the McCanns and members of the holiday group. Only apartment 5A was unoccupied at the time of the search. Holidaymaker occupants of the other apartments gave permission for the search to be conducted in their respective apartments.

In apartment 5A:
* between 20h16 (typing error in the report shows 21h16) and 20h30 the "cadaver" dog alerted:
- at 20h20 in the area of the wardrobe of the main bedroom
- at 20h22 in the lounge, specifically behind the sofa next to the window that overlooks the street.

* between 20h47 and 21.20 the "blood" dog alerted:
- at 21h10 in the lounge, specifically on the floor behind the sofa next to the wondow that overlooks the street.

In apartments 5B between 21h24 and 21h27; 5D between 21h29 and 21h34; 5H between 21h35 and 21h38; 4G between 21h42 and 21h45; the "cadaver" dog made no alerts.

Between 21h49 and 22h00, in the garden adjacent to apartment 5A, accessible from by way of the veranada and steps, the cadaver dog alerted in a garden-bed directly below the veranda.

Processo pages 2056 and 2057

These two pages are an official document for the case file regarding the search dog examination of areas around the Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, Lagos on 1 August 2007.

The area surrounding the Ocean Club having been previously assessed with respect to place-names, soil characteristics and proximity to apartment 5A [refer Mark Harrison's report for details], the following areas were selected for search by the "cadaver" dog, all without results:

1 - Between 06h40 and 07h15 the area between Rua da Piteira and Rua da Oliveira;

Sniffer Dog Report

Date: 06 and 07 August 2007

Place: Underground Car Park, Praca 1 de Maio, Portimao.

Participants:

1. PJ – Tavares de Almeida, Chief Inspector
2. PJ – Joao Carlos Pereira, Inspector
3. PJ – Ricardo Paiva, Inspector
4. UK – Mark Harrison
5. UK Martin Grime UK Forensic Canine P SM Expert
6. EDDY – English Springer
7. KEELA – English Springer

AN IMAGE AND SOUND RECORDING OF THE WHOLE INQUIRY WAS MADE.

On 6th August 2007 at about 15.17 a sniffer dog inspection was carried out of the following cars that had been placed for this purpose in the underground car park mentioned previously:

Vehicle nº 1 – Opel Corsa – number plate 75-AG-62
Vehicle nº 2 – Fiat Punto – number plate 45-49-ER
Vehicle nº 3 – Peugeot 205 – number plate RI-96-03
Vehicle nº 4 – Renault Scenic – number plate – 59-DA-27
Vehicle nº 5 – Skoda Fabia – number plate 96-26-VE
Vehicle nº 6 – Volkswagon Transporter – number plate 44-77-KD
Vehicle nº 7 – Nissan Patrol – number plate VH-24-22
Vehicle nº 8 – Volkswagon Passat – number plate 57-12-HP
Vehicle nº 9 – Audi A4 – number plate 10-91-FP
Vehicle nº 10 –Renault Kangoo – number plate 07-50-UI

The inquiry began at the time indicated, the dog EDDY which detects cadaver odour, searched the whole of the floor of the underground car park where the cars were parked with the following result:

15.27 – the dog “marked” vehicle nº4 – Renault Scenic – number plate – 59-DA-27, the rental car currently used by Gerry and Kate McCann.

The Renault Scenic vehicle – number plate 59-DA-27 was removed to the third floor of the underground car park and was subjected to a forensic search by officers from the Scientific Police Laboratory and another sniffer dog inspection that began at 03.49 on 7th August by the dog KEELA, which detected human blood remains, the following results were noted:

03.53 – the dog “marked” a zone on the right inferior side of the inside of the luggage compartment of the vehicle;

04.11 – the dog “marked” the compartment on the driver’s side, which was seen to contain the vehicle’s key, of a plastic electronic card type, with a key ring from the Budget car rental agency.

With the aim of confirming whether the dog had effectively “marked” the vehicle’s key, which was inside the compartment on the driver’s side, at 04.13 the key in question was removed from the vehicle and hidden in a place far from the vehicle on the third floor of the underground car park.

At about 04.14 it was observed that the dog “marked” the area of a box containing sand from the Fire Service, underneath which, effectively, the vehicle’s key had been hidden.

At approximately 04.50 a new sniffer dog inspection was carried out using the dog EDDY which detects cadaver odour, using the vehicle key which for this purpose was hidden on the fourth floor of the underground car park, far away from the vehicle.

At about 04.51, it was observed that the dog “marked” the area of the box containing sand from the Fire Service, underneath which the key had been hidden.

Signed.

Official record of the canine inspection at 18h14 on 2 August 2007 at the current residence of the McCann couple situated at Rua das Flores, 27, Praia da Luz, Lagos.

The five participants are indicated as two PJ Inspectors; UK NPIA officer (Harrison); UK dog handler (Grime); UK English Springer spaniel (Eddy).

The entire activity was recorded on video image and sound.

As part of the residence search performed today at the above address, a canine search was also conducted.

Thus, the activity started at the indicated time, all rooms at the address [property] having been walked through, the following result being confirmed:

- 18h36 - the dog Eddy, that detects cadaver odour, 'marked' [alerted in] the area of a cupboard in the lounge, it being confirmed that the dog indicated a pink soft toy belonging to Madeleine Beth McCann.

This document is drawn up to ratify the truth of the above and is duly signed.

Pages 2100-2102

Official record of the canine inspection at 23h20 on 2 August 2007 at the Municipal Pavilion of Lagos, [situated in] Lagos.

The ten participants are indicated as being five PJ Chief Inspectors (2)/Inspectors (3); The UK NPIA officer (Harrison); the UK dog handler (Grime); the Portuguese-speaking officer from Scotland Yard (Freitas); and the two UK English Springer spaniels - Eddy and Kila.

Following the search effected at Rua das Flores, 27, during which certain items were seized, this present inspection was performed, in a place appropriated for its purpose, attempting to identify particular pieces of clothing possibly indicated by the dogs, namely Eddy [that] indicates cadaver odours and Kila [that] indicates blood odours.

In these terms, the pieces of clothing recovered [from the home] were laid out individually in accordance with instructions given by the British technicians, the dogs [then] walking the area where they [those pieces of clothing] were laid out by order and with the following results described below.

1. Between 23h20 and 23h30 the two dogs were allowed to reconnoitre the entire area to guarantee that there were no existing odours - and none were detected by them.

2. Between 23h30 and 23h40 items from the box labelled 'common room' were inspected by the blood dog without result.
- At 23h41 the cadaver dog began its inspection and 'marked' some clothing on the edge of the area. The inspection ended at 23h52 with the clothing having been collected for later direct examination and photographic report.

3. Clothes from the box labelled Lounge ("sitting room") were inspected by the blood dog between 00h02 (now 3 August) and 00h05 without any result. The same clothes were inspected by the cadaver dog between 00h06 and 00h07 also without any result.

4. Then the suitcase labelled 'Twins bedroom' was inspected, followed by two sets of inspections of its contents due to the large number of individual pieces it contained: the blood dog inspected [the first set] between 00h12 and 00h15, and then [the second set] between 00h22 and 00h24 - both without any result.
The cadaver dog inspected [set one] between 00h16 and 00h17, then [set two] between 00h25 and 00h26, also without any result.

5. An empty suitcase labelled 'Visitors bedroom' was inspected, along with sundry clothing packed in a box labelled Outside Clothes rack. Between 00h40 and 00h43 the blood dog inspected without any result, and in its turn the cadaver dog inspected between 00h44 and 00h45, also without any result.

6. The clothes packed in the box labelled "couple's bedroom 1" was inspected by the blood dog between 00h51 and 00h55, while the cadaver dog inspected it between 00h56 and 0057 without any result from either dog.
because there were so many pieces of clothing in the box a second inspection was conducted between 01h04 and 01h07 by the blood dog, and between 01h08 and 01h09 by the cadaver dog, [again] without any result from either dog.

7. The clothes packed in the box labelled "couple's bedroom 2" was inspected by the cadaver dog between 01h20 and 01h22, then the blood dog between 01h23 and 01h25. Nothing abnormal was detected by either dog.

Attached, the photo report which immediately follows and the video recording on MiniDV cassette.

There being nothing more the activity stopped at 01h30.

This document is drawn up to ratify the truth of the above and it is going to be signed by all participants.
(three signatures appended; five missing)

Sniffer Dog Inspection Report

Date: 1st August 2007. 20.00

Place: Praia da Luz, Lagos

7. EDDY, English Springer Spaniel

On this date, after having checked the area surrounding the Ocean Club resort, in Praia da Luz, considering that there were topological elements, soil characteristics and the distance from the apartment from which Madeleine McCann disappeared, an inspection was made using the sniffer dog specialised in the detection of cadaver odour, in Praia da Luz, in the area that includes the beginning of the rocky formation contiguous to the beach and commonly referred to as “talefa” to the area called “Rocha Negra” which is characterised by the existence of a chimney of volcanic origin.

1. Accordingly, at about 20.05 a search was made of the extension of the area, rocks and rocky concaves existing in the terrain, nothing abnormal being detected. The inspection was concentrated on an area located to the left of Praia da Luz, heading towards the sea from the Millenium restaurant. The whole terrain described was covered, nothing abnormal was detected and the diligence was concluded at about 21.00.

Report is signed by the participants.
