Subject: Communication of eventual lead in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann



I inform you that today, at about 10.40, this police station was contacted by María Pereira who said that last Sunday (06-05) in the Quinta das Conchas metro station, she saw two Brazilian women, one of them carrying a female child, who corresponded to the description of Madeleine McCann.

She adds that the girl appeared to be “dozing” (she appeared sleepy but managed to keep her eyes open) and she saw that the girl had identical blue eyes to those on the posters distributed with regard to the girl in question.


As regards the Brazilian women she can only say that they were dark haired, young, one of them aged between 25-28 and the other between 27-32.

That is all I have to bring to your knowledge.

We went to Villa Guida, situated in Casas de Alcaria, nº 46, Altura, Vila Real de S: Antonio where we found K.E. Atack, an English citizen who was on holiday and who confirmed that she had arrived on the previous day 05 May via Faro and that they were due to leave on the 15th May.

This citizen told us that she had come to the Algarve for the third time to spend her holiday and was accompanied by her daughter H. G. born on 15-07-2004 and by her mother.

The three English citizens were seen by us, the child was fine, there was no doubt concerning the family links between her and those who were with her, all having their respective documents.

That is all I have to inform you.

Inform you that today at about 14.50 a phone call was received by this police station from Sargeant Pereira from the Rio de Mouro GNR station, saying that Julio Alves da Costa, resident of Rio de Mouro was at the GNR station saying the following:

That on Saturday 5th May between 09.00 and 11.00 he had seen, opposite the Café Joao da Luz in Rio de Mouro, owned by Joao de Luz, a female and a male accompanied by a girl aged 3 or 4, with blond hair, although he did not see any other of the girl’s characteristics.

He adds that these individuals were accompanied by another man who drove a grey or green car.

He thinks the girl could have been Madeleine McCann.

Sergeant Pereira was requested to send this service information by fax.

Subject: Disappearance of English girl


On this date, I went to the “Feira Nova” hypermarket in Torres Novas, with the aim of collecting the images recorded by the video security system installed at that establishment with regard to an adult and a child that were at that location on 06-05-2007 at about 20.50, as it was presumed that the child could be Madeleine McCann, missing from the Algrave since 03-05 of this month.

I contacted the manager of the hypermarket, Sr Tavares who immediately facilitated the viewing of the images, saying that he was aware of the subject as he had been contacted by the Torres Novas GNR.

From the security camera monitors I could observe a man and a female child doing some shopping at the hypermarket. The images did not allow for a clear visualisation of the girl’s face, but it was possible to note that she was aged between 3 and 5 and had fair hair of shoulder length. All the “action” took place normally, and it appeared that the adult and the child had family links, judging by the way the girl moved around, e.g. sometimes she was at the adult’s side without holding his hand. It was not possible to observe the number plate of the vehicle used by these persons, it appeared to be a dark red old style Ford Fiesta.

The manager of the hypermarket promised to deliver a digital copy of the video images in question.

INFORMATION


On 6th May 2007, at about 22.30, a telephone call was received by this GNR post, made by Sra Batista, resident of Torres Novas, informing us that at the Feira Nova hypermarket in Torres Novas, at about 21.00 she thinks she saw the missing girl Madeleine, accompanied by a man.

According to the witness, the man had a three day beard, was wearing jeans and was aged about 30-35, she could not provide any more of his characteristics.

We contacted her at 08.30 today, in order to check the veracity of the information, she stated that she accompanied the individual with the girl to the check out, trying to enter into conversation with her, suspecting her to be the missing girl, as she was very similar in appearance and the man replied that the girl was not speaking because she was shy.

Inquiries were made at the establishment, by means of checks of the security cameras, which confirmed that between 20.50 and 21.05 on the 6th May 2007, a vehicle (not yet identified) arrived at the centre, with the individual and the girl described above, who entered the establishment, remained for 10 minutes and left by the same door, getting into the vehicle and leaving in the direction of Entroncamento.

This information has been compiled for the Leiria PJ Coordinator.

I inform you that at about 10.15 this police station received a phone call from Sr Cardoso, who told us that yesterday (06-05-07) at 19.30, when his son Marcelo Cardoso and his girlfriend were at the Ferreiras train station, they saw a couple which was accompanied by the missing girl take the train in the direction of Faro.

According to Sr Cardoso his son and his girlfriend made this known to Loulé GNR. However, and in spite of that situation, he also decided to bring this to the knowledge of the PJ.

His son can be contacted on ***** with the aim of providing other elements to the investigation.

Meanwhile, it has been established that the Loulé GNR has informed this police station about the fact, on the same day, and this information has been communicated to Portimao DIC.

I inform you that today at about 14.30 a phonecall was received by this police station, made by a female individual, who identified herself as Julia Silva Pereira, the owner of a commercial establishment situated in Nazaré, who said that one of her clients told her of a sighting on the 06-05-2007 in Sitio da Tornada, on the Nazaré – Caldas da Rainha road in a tree sheltered area where cars tend to stop to rest.

According to her client, one of the cars belonged to a foreign couple, who were accompanied by two small children, a boy and a girl, who appeared to her to be the missing girl from Lagos, when she tried to confirm her suspicions, the couple in question got into the car with the children and immediately left the scene.

He told us that on the 6th or 7th of May 2007, he saw a girl, accompanied by a woman, outside a supermarket in the place where he lives. He thinks that the girl he saw could be the missing Madeleine McCann.

When questioned, he made himself available to provide more information, having provided the contact number mentioned above.

I inform you that today at about 20.30 this PJ station was informed by Assistant Chief Helena of Funchal PSP that a few moments earlier the Machico police station had received telephone information about the possible whereabouts of Madeleine McCann, missing from Praia da Luz in the Algarve.


According to the PSP officer, a girl very similar to Madeleine McCann was seen near to the Engenho bus station in Machico, accompanied by a woman, the driver of a green Renault Clio, with number plate 01-79-OR, registered in the name of Cristina Abreu Sousa, resident of Santa Cruz.

Upon superior orders inquiries were immediately made to clarify the situation.


However, at about 21.15, Assistant Chief Helena informed us that the PSP had in the meantime located the vehicle in question as well as Mrs Sousa, who was indeed the owner and driver. It was possible to confirm the presence of the woman in Machico, accompanied by a girl, who was identified as her daughter.

The situation having been clarified and found to have nothing to do with the missing English girl, the immediate demobilisation of the officers was ordered.
