Service Information

Date: 2008-06-17

To: The Coordinator of the Criminal Investigation, Paulo Rebelo

From: Inspector Ricardo Paiva

Subject: Communication to join to the process files

Within the scope of the investigation referred to above into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, this police station received information from the British authorities, telling of an alleged sighting of the girl in the company of three women at about 13.00 on 16th May 2008 at the Lugar de Enquenter restaurant, situated in the Avenida de Mayo in Porlamar, Margarita Island, Venezuela.

The alleged sighting was reported to the British authorities by a sailor named Trevor Francis, captain of a sailing yacht who was staying at the Marina Hilton and had lunch at the restaurant that day.

The Liaison Officer of this police force in Venezuela was requested by fax to gather all the pertinent information about this subject as well as the diligences considered appropriate, in the sense of preserving elements (security camera images, contacts with eventual witnesses, etc) in order to check the reliability of this information.

I bring this to your knowledge.

Signed

Inspector Paiva

Service Information

To: The Station Commander, Ana Paula Rito

From: Luis Neves, Inspector

Subject: John Hogan

Together with the respective external diligence with regard to the inquiries made at the residence of John Michael Paul Hogan, an individual who was the subject of comments made to this police force telling of his disappearance during the period coinciding with the events being investigated.

The inquiries carried out enables us to establish that the individual was living in the Algarve, this information having been obtained from his wife, Emma Hogan without anything concrete being found out of interest to the material in the process files.

I inform you that on this date John Hogan presented himself at this police station and confirmed that he knew about the inquiries that had been made from his wife and confirmed that he could be contacted on mobile nº********* and that he currently lives in Loulé, although he does not remember the postal address.

I suggest this is sent to Portimão DIC for joining to the case files.

Signed

Inspector

Luis Neves.

Executing Officers: Chief Inspecor Salvador, Inspectors, Neves, Pereira and Jacinto.

Description and Result of Inquiry:

On 2007-05-09 we went to the residence of John Hogan at **** Sao Bras de Alportel.

At the site was Emma Hogan, mobile***** who was at the residence with the couple’s daughter aged 4, who does not correspond in appearance to the girl mentioned in the files.

Emma Hogan clarified that her husband had left the marital home about 10 days ago, due to marital problems related to his infidelity.

She clarified that she is in contact with her husband and that on the previous day, which was their daughter’s birthday, he had passed by the residence.

With regard to the fact that he had never again contacted the estate agency Cashouses, she clarifies that he had commented to her that he did not see any viability in that activity and for that reason had stopped turning up at work, and is unemployed at the moment.

She stated that her husband would not have anything to do with the events being investigated, that she does not know him to be disturbed or to have any abnormal behaviour which would justify his involvement.

She stated that the last time the couple was in Sotavento was for a period a few years ago, in 2000, in Burgau, when they first moved to Portugal.

She said the number plate of the English car that her husband drives is GPO4YPG.

Service Information

From: Inspector José Mesquita

Subject: Information about missing girl

I inform you that today at about 12.30 Sra Maria da Conceicao da Silva Dias, resident in Lagos, mobile nº***** appeared at this police station, informing us that on the day 03-05-2007, at about 18.30 or 19.30 she saw a girl with Madeleine’s characteristics pass - carried by an individual, height about 1.70m, with brown hair, she could see that the individual had quite physically well developed arms – near to R.Vasco da Gama, Lagos.

This situation aroused the curiosity of the witness, by the fact that the child appeared very reluctant to be carried by the individual and that he was carrying the girl with her face covered.

But she says that the girl had golden brown hair, coinciding with the photos of Madeleine that had been distributed.

The motive for this information and the fact that the times provided for the disappearance do not appear to coincide with the sighting by the witness.

I bring this to your knowledge.

Signed.

Subject: Information relating to the Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

I bring to your knowledge that today this police station was contacted by Maria José Rosa Varela, resident in Rua Glória Dias in Espiche, in Luz, in Lagos, who said she had seen Madeleine three times, as follows:

- On 5th May 2007, at about 16.00, near to Praca de Armas, in Lagos, accompanied by a female individual, with blond hair, and that both were riding a bicycle;

- On 16th May 2007, at about 18.30, at Lagos Hospital, being carried by a male individual, aged about 35/40.

- On 25th May 2007, at about 09.00 at the Lagos Health Centre, in the company of the two individuals mentioned above.

But she adds that she is certain that the girl in question was Madeleine, because she was blonde and had a “very frightened look”.

Service Information

To: The Coordinator of the Criminal Investigation

From: Inspector Nelson Pacheco

Subject: Communication of situation eventually related to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann

I bring to your knowledge that today at about 10.30 a phone call was received by this police station from Gonçalo Duarte, manager of the “Repsol” petrol station in Albufeira, saying that yesterday, the day 04-05-2007 at about 11.13, at that petrol station, a vehicle was observed, make Renault 9, blue in colour, with number plate AQ-23-81, occupied by a couple and a young girl, possibly aged 3 to 4 years old, with very similar physical characteristics to those of the missing English girl, Madeleine McCann, aged 3.

Following superior orders, the undersigned officer went to the scene, accompanied by Specialist Assistant Fernando Domingos, having proceeded to record a CD-R containing the elements mentioned above, which, after having been viewed by officers responsible for the investigation, nothing of interest was revealed, because the girl observed on the recording was not Madeleine McCann.

However, the company Eurest Portugal in charge of the restaurant management in the area of Olhao, on the A22 was requested to provide security video footage from 22.00 of 3rd May to the present date, according to the adjoined fax.

I bring this to your attention,

Signed

Service Information

To: The Coordinator of the SRCB

From: Inspector Pedro Azevedo

Subject: Madeleine McCann – Intermarché and Lidl in Condeixa-a-Nova

In the follow up to communications received by this police station, taking into account that a girl has been seen who could be Madeleine McCann, an English girl who recently disappeared from the Algarve, in two supermarkets situated in Condeixa-a-Nova, concretely in Intermarché (at about 12.00 on 05-05-2007) and in Lidl (at about 19.30 on 04-05-2007), according to superior order the undersigned officer, accompanied by Inspector Marinho Nunes, went to the establishments referred to with the aim of gathering more information relating to the facts.

In Intermarché, the manager facilitated the viewing of images recorded on the video security system inside the supermarket.

On these images a Caucasian woman was seen, aged about 40-45, circulating freely in the supermarket with a girl who appeared to be 3-4 years old. After collecting products, they both waited at the check out.

When they were attended, the girl in question left the adult and ran to join another child who appeared to be slightly older and a male adult, who were a few metres away in a shop within the building. The two children played there and with the male adult.

After a few minutes waiting for the woman who was paying at the check out, the four left the commercial centre for an unknown destination.

From what was observed, all of these movements took place without any strange or uncommon attitude, apparently just being a normal family out shopping.

Then Ana Rodrigues was contacted, the check out operator who attended these persons, who said she had attended them and that they had behaved as normal customers and spoke fluent Portuguese without any accent. When asked if on that day she had attended a customer who expressed themselves in a language different to Portuguese, she said she remembered attending a couple who expressed themselves in French (after lunch time, at about 14.00 to 15.00) and who had nothing to do with these persons. She recalls this fact well, given that she has worked there for a short time and this one of the first times that this happened to her.

Afterwards, we went to the Lidl supermarket, situated at the same commercial centre, where Sonia Claro (responsible for the establishment) allowed us to view images from the security video of this supermarket.

We were able to see that at about 19.15 of the day in question (time of the security video) the entrance of a family consisting of an adult couple, a girl who apparently had the same age as the missing English girl and a boy who seemed slightly older. We saw that the girl had a hairstyle that was very identical to the English girl. However, her hair was dark brown and not light brown/blond.

These four persons entered the supermarket and walked around normally inside, picking up some products from the shelves. Afterwards they went to the check out where they paid, then left the supermarket for an unknown destination. It should be mentioned that for brief moments the adult male left the other three while they were waiting to pay, and returned a few moments later.

Checking the registers of the two establishments, the purchases made were paid in cash, therefore there was no reference to the customers’ identity.

The photos extracted from the security video from Intermarché are attached.

As regards the Lidl supermarket, it would only be possible for the technician who was not present to extract the photos. They will be joined to the Service Information.

From all the information obtained, it was concluded that the two girls who were seen in the Lidl and Intermarché supermarkets in Condeixa-a-Nova on the days 04 and 05-05-2007 respectively, were not Madeleine McCann.

I bring this to your knowledge.

Inspector
