Subject: Madeleine McCann – Intermarché and Lidl in Condeixa-a-NovaIn the follow up to communications received by this police station, taking into account that a girl has been seen who could be Madeleine McCann, an English girl who recently disappeared from the Algarve, in two supermarkets situated in Condeixa-a-Nova, concretely in Intermarché (at about 12.00 on 05-05-2007) and in Lidl (at about 19.30 on 04-05-2007), according to superior order the undersigned officer, accompanied by Inspector Marinho Nunes, went to the establishments referred to with the aim of gathering more information relating to the facts.
In Intermarché, the manager facilitated the viewing of images recorded on the video security system inside the supermarket.
On these images a Caucasian woman was seen, aged about 40-45, circulating freely in the supermarket with a girl who appeared to be 3-4 years old. After collecting products, they both waited at the check out.
When they were attended, the girl in question left the adult and ran to join another child who appeared to be slightly older and a male adult, who were a few metres away in a shop within the building. The two children played there and with the male adult.
After a few minutes waiting for the woman who was paying at the check out, the four left the commercial centre for an unknown destination.
From what was observed, all of these movements took place without any strange or uncommon attitude, apparently just being a normal family out shopping.
Then Ana Rodrigues was contacted, the check out operator who attended these persons, who said she had attended them and that they had behaved as normal customers and spoke fluent Portuguese without any accent. When asked if on that day she had attended a customer who expressed themselves in a language different to Portuguese, she said she remembered attending a couple who expressed themselves in French (after lunch time, at about 14.00 to 15.00) and who had nothing to do with these persons. She recalls this fact well, given that she has worked there for a short time and this one of the first times that this happened to her.
Afterwards, we went to the Lidl supermarket, situated at the same commercial centre, where Sonia Claro (responsible for the establishment) allowed us to view images from the security video of this supermarket.
We were able to see that at about 19.15 of the day in question (time of the security video) the entrance of a family consisting of an adult couple, a girl who apparently had the same age as the missing English girl and a boy who seemed slightly older. We saw that the girl had a hairstyle that was very identical to the English girl. However, her hair was dark brown and not light brown/blond.
These four persons entered the supermarket and walked around normally inside, picking up some products from the shelves. Afterwards they went to the check out where they paid, then left the supermarket for an unknown destination. It should be mentioned that for brief moments the adult male left the other three while they were waiting to pay, and returned a few moments later.
Checking the registers of the two establishments, the purchases made were paid in cash, therefore there was no reference to the customers’ identity.
The photos extracted from the security video from Intermarché are attached.
As regards the Lidl supermarket, it would only be possible for the technician who was not present to extract the photos. They will be joined to the Service Information.
From all the information obtained, it was concluded that the two girls who were seen in the Lidl and Intermarché supermarkets in Condeixa-a-Nova on the days 04 and 05-05-2007 respectively, were not Madeleine McCann.
I bring this to your knowledge.
Inspector
