Portugal News OnlineMcCanns criticise release of information to UK media13/3/2010
The parents of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann have hit out at the release of previously unseen documents by Portuguese authorities relating to the investigation into the disappearance of their daughter. The couple further believe making public certain information could hamper the search for Madeleine.

Last week, the Public Prosecutor in Portugal (Portimão) decided to release a large number of files relating to Madeleine McCann to a group of British tabloids, following their request for access.
According to Kate and Gerry McCann, “Disclosing such information publicly greatly jeopardises the search for Madeleine and puts witnesses and innocent members of the general public at risk (as well as causing them great anxiety). Release and publication of information in this manner also potentially compromises future investigations. It is difficult to see how anyone benefits from this week’s actions.”
The couple further called on Portuguese authorities to take responsibility for sensitive and confidential information. “We, together with the general public, need assurances that this will not be allowed to happen again”, the McCanns said in a statement, adding: “Equally, we need absolute assurances that all credible information and leads will be investigated.”
Madeleine McCann went missing from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007 shortly before her fourth birthday, sparking a worldwide search which gradually died down after her parents were declared “arquidos” or persons of interest by detectives investigating her disappearance.
