Witness Statement of Alexander James CAMERON

This testimony (constituted by three pages and signed by me) is the truth and in accordance with my understanding. I give this testimony with the knowledge that, knowingly making false statements may subject me to legal action.

I am the above referenced person, also known between friends and family as “Sandy.” I have been married to my wife Patricia CAMERON for 23 years but we knew each other for a few years before that. Patricia is Gerry McCann’s sister, making me Gerry’s brother-in-law. I got to know Gerry roughly the same time I got to know Patricia—approximately 30 years. Around 10 years ago, Gerry married Kate Healy and since that time I have know Kate. Gerry and Kate have three children, Madeleine (4 years old) and the twins Sean and Amelie (2 years old). I have met with Kate and Gerry and the children on numerous occasions both tat their home and in mine. I also visited the family when Gerry was working in Amsterdam. On the night of Thursday, May 3, 2007, Patricia received a telephone call from Gerry informing us of the disappearance of Madeleine. Gerry manifested all those emotions one expects from a father who has lost a child in the circumstances. He was distraught and spoke at the same time he cried. He seemed frustrated with the slowness of the searches in Portugal, with the fact that the borders had not been closed, and with the fact that sniffer dogs were not being used. Patricia and I contacted the British Embassy to try and help in this regard. We also decided to fly to Portugal in order to offer all our help and support to Kate and Gerry. It was not possible for us to arrange to a flight on Friday, and consequently left Manchester to faro on Saturday, May 5, 2007. When we arrived in Praia da Luz we found Kate and Gerry. At this time we noticed a huge interest from the media regarding what had happened and Gerry and Kate were being helped in part by the Foreign (traveler) Services, representatives from Mark Warner and other members of the family.

They continued to demonstrate much distress and tried to deal with all the advice given to them, much of which was contradictory. When we arrived in Portugal we stayed in an apartment in the Mark Warner Praia da Luz complex. Kate and Gerry were still lodged in the same complex, even though it was not the same apartment. We had a separate apartment on the same floor and close to two doors somewhat of a distance. During part of this time, our days had similar routines. During the day we would leave the apartment to meet with Kate and Gerry in order to care for the twins Sean and Amelie, and also to cook for all of us. Kate and Gerry would use our apartment as an office in order to have meetings and to effect search plans for Madeleine. This continued until the end of June, at a time when Mark Warner required that we leave the complex and at a time when tourist high season was about to begin.

During these first two months we provided help to Kate and Gerry, and only returned to the U.K. on two occasions in order to take care of some personal business. In the beginning of July of 2007, we left the Ocean Club and moved to a villa with Kate, Gerry and the twins in the Montinhos zone, around 1.5 km from the OC. We never noticed anything strange in the site were we stayed. On the 27th of May of 2007, Gerry was handed a rental vehicle in the Mark Warner tourist complex; a Renault Scenic with plate number 59-DA-27. I met with the representative of the car rental agency at Gerry’s request, and as such, my name was also on the rental contract so that I could also drive the vehicle; to drive the children and to go shopping. These were things that Gerry was too occupied to carry out himself. I was the habitual drive of the vehicle and used it daily. I drove to many places, including the airport, local supermarkets, and drove the children to the zoo and the beaches in the area. I also traveled as a passenger on many occasions, when Kate, Gerry or other people were visiting, or driving the vehicle. People who were present in the vehicle were Kate, Gerry, Sean, Amelie, Mike Wright, Janet (Kate’s aunt), Kate’s mother and father, and her friend Amanda. Basically, the vehicle served as a transport for friend and family who cam to offer their help to Kate and Gerry and also to effect daily routines. The same vehicle was also used to move us from the Ocean Club to the villa, transporting all the luggage and personal objects from one location to the other. During these trips, the children seats would be removed to create space.

Whilst in the villa, a gardener would arrive every week or about every 15 days. This was organized by the estate agency. The gardener would leave black rubbish bags near the gate, and on at least one occasion, I used the vehicle to remove these bags. The collection of rubbish in Portugal is not made as it is in the U.K., and for this reason, it was necessary to take the rubbish to a tip (disposal area) which was called “recycling area” near the back of the Ocean Club. I used the Renault Scenic for this reason on many occasions.

On one occasion, I believe it was on July of 2007, I took Patricia to the supermarket. We carried bags in the boot (trunk) of the Renault Scenic; bought various items including fresh fish, shrimp and beef. When we unloaded the shopping bags, we noticed that blood has run out of the bottom of the plastic bag. After this shopping trip and still in the month of July 2007, I began to notice a strange odour in the car. I did not give it much importance and assumed it was likely due to the leakage from the rubbish bags or from the blood which had escaped from the shopping bags. As a result, we removed the carpet from the boot (trunk) in order to clean it. I tossed (beat) the boot carpet to remove any particles and cleaned it with a wet cloth and left it to air out.

In my opinion, it is impossible that Kate and Gerry could have hidden Madeleine
or used the car to transport her to another locale. There was always a lot of people and the media observing their movements which would make this impossible. As I cited previously, I have know Madeleine her whole life and saw her on many occasions. I always found her a very smart little girl and careful with strangers. I also saw when she woke after a nap and after a night of sleep. She would occasionally appear irritated as she would when her parents were not present. For this reason, I believe that Madeleine had been awakened by a stranger she would certainly have screamed or cried out. I do not believe that there is any possibility that she would have let a stranger take her without protest.

Relative to what is cited above, I will add that I was interviewed via DVD by Dc Gierc of the Leicestershire police between 09h58 and 10h39 on Tuesday, 15 of April of 2008 in the Leicestershire Police Squad. I confirm that my DVD testimony is true and in accordance with my understanding.

Sou a pessoa acima referenciada, tambem conhecida entre os amigos e familiares como “Sandy”.

Estou casado com a minha esposa Patricia CAMERON há 23 anos e já nos conheciamos alguns anos antes. Patricia é a irmã de Gerry McCann ou seja, eu sou cunhado do Gerry. Conheci o Gerry mais ou menos na mesma altura que conheci a Patricia, daí que o conheço há aproximadamente uns 30 anos. Cerca de 10 anos atrás o Gerry contariu matrimónio com a Kate HEALY e desde então que também conheço a Kate.
Gerry e Kate tem três filhos, Madeleine (4 anos de idade) e os gémeos Sean e Amelie ( 2 anos de idade). Encontrei a Kate e o Gerry e os filhos em inúmeras ocasiões tendo por vezes pernoitado em casa deles e eles na minha. Tambem visitei a familia durante o ano em que o Gerry esteve a trabalhar em Amesterdão.
Na noite de Quinta feira, 3 de Maio de 2007, Patricia recebeu um telefonema do Gerry a contar-nos do desaparecimento de Madeleine. Gerry manisfestou todas as emoções que são de esperar de um pai que perdeu uma criança nestas circunstâncias. Ele estava consternado e falava alto ao mesmo tempo que chorava. Parecia frustrado com a forma como as buscas estavam lentamente a decorrer em Portugal e pelo facto das fronteiras não terem sido fechadas e os cães pisteiros não estarem a ser utilizados. Patricia e eu contactamos a Embaixada Britânica em Portugal para tentar ajudar neste sentido. Patricia e eu concordamos em viajar para Portugal para dar todo o nosso apoio e ajuda à Kate e ao Gerry.
Não nos foi possivel arranjar voo na Sexta feira seguinte, e acabamos por partir de Manchester para Faro no Sábado dia 5 de Maio de 2007. Quando chegamos à Praia da Luz encontramo-nos com a Kate e o Gerry. Nessa altura deparamos com um enorme interesse por parte da comunicação social sobre o sucedido e o Gerry e a Kate eram aconselhados por parte dos Serviços de Estrangeiros, representantes do Mark Warner e outros membros da familia.
Apesar de tudo isto, eles continuavam a demonstrar muita consternação e tentavam digerir todos os conselhos dados, muitos deles contraditórios.
Quando chegamos a Portugal ficamos hospedados num apartamento do complexo do Mark Warner na Praia da Luz. A Kate e o Gerry ainda se encontravam no mesmo complexo, embora não no mesmo apartamento inicial.
Nós tinhamos um apartamento separado no mesmo piso mas a cerca de duas portas de distância. Durante parte deste tempo, os nossos dias tiveram rotinas parecidas. Durante o dia deslocavamo-nos ao apartamento da Kate e do Gerry para tomar conta dos gémeos Sean e Amelie, bem como para cozinhar as refeições para todos nós. A Kate o Gerry usavam então o nosso apartamento como escritório provisório para efectuar reuniões e delinear o plano de busca da Madeleine. Isto continuou até finais de Junho, altura em que o Mark Warner necessitou que deixasse-mos o complexo, uma vez que a epoca alta estava a começar.
Durante estes dois primeiros meses providenciamos ajuda familiar a Kate e Gerry, apenas regressando ao Reino Unido por duas ocasiões para tratar de assuntos familiares.
No inicio de Julho de 2007 deixamos o Ocean Club e mudamo-nos para uma villa com a Kate, Gerry e os gémeos na zona de Montinhos da Luz, cerca de 1,5km do Ocean Club. Nunca reparei em nada de estranho em nenhum dos sitios onde ficamos.
No dia 27 de Maio de 2007 foi entregue a Gerry uma viatura de aluguer no complexo turístico do Mark Warner; um Renault Scenic com matricula 59-DA-27. Combinei encontrar-me com o representante da agência de rent a car a pedido do Gerry, e o meu nome também constava do contrato de aluguer para que pudesse conduzir a viatura, para levar os miudos ou fazer as compras, coisas que o Gerry estava demasiado ocupado para fazer.
Era o condutor habitual do veículo e utilizava-o diáriamente. Desloquei-me a inúmeros locais incluindo o aeroporto, supermercados locais, levar os miudos ao zoo e ás praias da zona.
Também viajei como passageiro em muitas ocasiões, quando era a Kate, Gerry ou outro familiar que estivesse de visita, a conduzir a viatura. Das pessoas entre as quais partilhei o espaço interior da viatura, encontram-se – Kate, Gerry, Sean e Amelie, Mike Wright (membro da familia), Janet (tia da Kate), a mãe e o pai da Kate e a sua amiga Amanda. Basicamente a viatura servia para transportar familiares e amigos que vinham dar apoio a Kate e Gerry bem como para efectuar as rotinas diárias.
Foi também utilizado para efectuar a mudança do Ocean Club para a villa, transportando toda a bagagem e objectos pessoais de um local para o outro. Durante estas viagens os bancos tiveram que ser removidos para criar espaço.
Enquanto estivemos na villa, um jardineiro vinha todas as semanas ou de quinze em quinze dias, tal como havia sido determinado pela empresa Imobiliária. O jardineiro deixava os sacos do lixo perto da porta das traseiras e pelo menos em uma ocasião, utilizei o veiculo pra despejar esse lixo. A recolha do lixo em Portugal não é feita da mesma forma que no Reino Unido, por isso era necessario levar todo o lixo para uma area à qual eu chamaria “area de reciclagem” nas traseiras do Ocean Club. Usei o Renault Scenic para este fim por diversas ocasiões.
Numa ocasião, penso que em Julho de 2007, levei a Patricia ao supermercado. Colocamos as compras na bagageira do Renault Scenic; compramos variadas coisas incluindo peixe fresco, camarão e bife. Quando descarregamos as compras notei que o sangue havia escorrido da embalagem para o fundo do saco de plástico.
Depois desta ida às compras e ainda durante o mês de Julho de 2007, comecei a notar um odor estranho no carro. Não dei muita importância a isso e assumi que provavelmente era causado pelos sacos do lixo ou pelo sangue entornado na bagageira no dia das compras.
Como resultado, retirei o tapete da bagageira para lhe fazer uma limpeza. Sacudi o tapete para remover quaisquer particulas, limpei-o com um pano molhado e deixei-o a apanhar ar.
Na minha opinião pessoal é impossivel que a Kate e o Gerry tivessem escondido a Madeleine algures e usado o carro para a transportar para outro local. Havia sempre muita gente e meios de comunicação a observar cada movimento deles, para tornar isso possivel.
Como citei anteriormente, conheço a Madeleine toda a sua vida e vi-a em inúmeras ocasiões.
Sempre a achei uma menina muito esperta e prudente em relação a estranhos. Tambem a vi quando ela acorda tanto depois de uma sesta como depois de uma noite completa de sono.
Ocasionalmente presenciei a forma irritada em que ficava quando era acordada, principalmente se os pais não estivessem presentes. Por esta razão julgo que se a Madeleine tivesse sido acordada por um estranho, certamente teria gritado e esperneado. Não creio que exista alguma possibilidade de se ter deixado levar por um estranho sem qualquer tipo de luta ou protesto.
Relativamente ao citado acima, acrescento que fui entrevistado em DVD pelo Dc Gierc da Policia de Leicestershire entre as 09h58 e as 10h39 de Terça feira, 15 de Abril de 2008 na Esquadra da Policia de Leicestershire. Confirmo que o depoimento em DVD é verdadeiro e de acordo com o meu conhecimento da verdade.
