PS Former BBC hack Clarence Mitchell, Kate and Gerry McCann's newly unveiled media adviser, once harboured ambitions to become the spokesman for Prince William.
"He almost begged us to take him on," recalls a Palace aide. "He was working as a royal reporter at the BBC but was fed up and wanted a change and offered himself as the ideal candidate to be William's press officer."
The offer was not taken up and Mitchell went on to become a government spin doctor in the Cabinet Office as the director of its media monitoring unit.
